Cal Baseball Loses to No. 2 Stanford, 8-3
April 18, 2004
STANFORD, CA - The California baseball team had a brief 2-0 lead on a two-run homer by James Holder in the second inning, but that was as good as it would get for the Golden Bears as they fell to No. 2 ranked Stanford, 8-3, Sunday at Sunken Diamond. The Bears go to 20-23 overall and 6-9 in the Pac-10. Stanford, 15-1 in home games this season, improved to 29-5 and 7-2 in league play. The Cardinal swept the series, winning 7-4 Friday night and 9-2 Saturday.
Junior designated hitter Holder, who has hit a home run in four of the last six games, knocked in the first two runs of the game with a two-run shot in the second inning off of Stanford starter Blake Holler (1.7 innings, three hits, two runs, three walks, one strikeout). Unfortunately for Cal, the Cardinal came back with four runs in the bottom of the third off of Bear starter Matt Brown (3-3, 2.7 innings, four hits, three earned runs, four walks, one strikeout). Brown walked the first two batters of the third, and later gave up a fielder's choice RBI to Danny Putnam. A throwing error to home plate by Cal third baseman Matt Einspahr on a ball hit by John Mayberry, Jr. allowed another run, followed by a walk to Donny Lucy and a two-run double by Brian Hall.
Junior reliever Kyle Crist (3.0 innings, one hit, one run, four walks, three strikeouts) kept Stanford off the scoreboard until a wild pitch by Jesse Ingram allowed Jonny Ash to score in the sixth inning. The Cardinal added another run in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly by Chris Carter, and two runs in the eighth on a two-run homer by Jed Lowrie. The Bears had tacked on their third run of the game in the top of the eighth on a RBI ground out by junior left fielder Justin Nelson, scoring Chris Grossman, who had led-off the inning with a walk.
Cal finished the day with six hits, with senior shortstop Jeff Dragicevich going 2-for-4.
The Bears next travel to Pacific, Tuesday, Apr. 20 at 6 p.m. at Billy Hebert Field in Stockton. Cal then hosts UCLA in a three-game Pac-10 series, beginning Friday, Apr. 23 at 2:30 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
Cal: Holder, two-run homer in the second inning.
Stanford: Lowrie, two-run homer in the eighth inning.
