McCarthy Leads UCLA to 11-10 Win Over Arizona State
April 18, 2004
Ryan McCarthy went 5-for-5 with two home runs, including a two-run shot in the eighth to lead UCLA (20-16, 4-5) to a 11-10 win over Arizona State (26-12, 5-7) on Sunday afternoon.
With the score tied at 9-9 in the bottom of the eighth frame, McCarthy hit his second home run of the day over the center field wall to put the Bruins ahead 11-9. He drove in Brett McMillan who had singled a batter earlier.
In the top of the ninth, reliever Kevin Brophy issued a leadoff walk to Jeff Larish and then struck out Zechery Zinicola for the first out of the inning. A double from Colin Curtis would put runners on second and third with one out. Dustin Pedroia would hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring Larish home, but Matt Thayer caught Curtis trying to take third base and the game ended on the double play.
UCLA posted a run in the first frame before putting up four in the third. McCarthy hit a two-run shot in the inning before Chris Denove hit his own two-run homer later in the frame.
Arizona State brought the Bruin lead back to one run with a four-run fourth inning. However, UCLA would put up four of its own in the fifth to put it ahead by five runs again. The Bruins sent nine batters to the plate as four walks and singled from McCarthy and Mike Sveltic brought the runs in.
The Sun Devils posted three runs in the sixth and a run in each of the following frames, but it wouldn't be enough to overtake UCLA.
McCarthy set a career high with his five hits. He drove in four and scored three times. Chad Concolino extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a double in the seventh frame.
Brophy improved to 4-0 on the season with the win. He allowed two hits in the final two innings.
The Bruins will hit the road for the next five games as they head to Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
