Washington State Shuts Down USC With 5-1 Win

PULLMAN, Wash. - Pitcher Garrett Alwert threw a season-high eight shutout innings as the Washington State Cougars salvaged a win in the Pac-10 Conference series with a 5-1 decision over the USC Trojans. Alwert struck out five and walked only one as the Trojans mustered only four hits against the left-hander.
Washington State goes to 22-13 overall and 4-5 in Pac-10 play while USC falls to 19-18 on the season with a 5-4 conference mark. USC is now tied for second place with Washington and Arizona.
Freshman Cyle Hankerd went 3-for-4 with three singles. He snapped the shutout in the ninth off Brett Sommer with an RBI single.
Left fielder Kaeo Rubin led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run, his third of the season, off the right field foul pole screen. The Cougars added another run on an RBI single by catcher Brandon Reddinger in the second, scoring Jeremy Farrar.
Reddinger added a two-run triple in the sixth, followed by an RBI single by Justin McClure for a 5-0 WSU advantage.
The Trojans travel to Loyola Marymount on Tuesday (April 20) for a 3 p.m. game before hosting Oregon State in a Pac-10 Conference series, starting on Friday (April 23) at 7 p.m. The series with the Beavers continues on Saturday (April 24) at 2 p.m. and concludes on Sunday (April 25) at 1 p.m. All four games will be broadcast live, along with Gametracker live stats, on usctrojans.com.
