WSU Holds USC Scoreless For Eight Innings To Win 5-1
April 18, 2004
PULLMAN, Wash. - Brandon Reddinger drove home three runs and Garrett Alwert pitched eight innings of shutout ball as Washington State defeated USC 5-1 Sunday in the finale of a three-game Pacific-10 Conference baseball series at Bailey-Brayton Field.
'Garrett Alwert gave us an outstanding performance today,' WSU Head Coach Tim Mooney said. 'He pitched like a senior, with location and poise. Brandon gave us some timely hits that had been working against us this series.'
Starting pitcher, Garrett Alwert (3-1) lasted eight full innings for WSU (22-13, 4-5 Pac-10) holding the Trojans scoreless allowing four hits while striking out five batters. Senior Brandon Hundt recorded his second save of the season by recording the final out of the game. Sunday's performance was the longest outing Alwert had recorded this season, bettering his 6.1 innings against UC-Irvine March 14.
'Garrett stepped up the last two weekends when we needed pitching performances.' Cougar pitching coach Ryan Brust said. 'To go out and throw eight scoreless innings is something we needed to keep us going.'
USC's (19-18, 5-4 Pac-10) starting pitcher Bobby Paschal (2-6) took the loss, allowing five runs, all earned, and six hits while striking out five batters over 5.2 innings of work.
Kaeo Rubin started the game with a solo home run down the right field line to give the Cougars an early one-run lead.
Reddinger drove home the second WSU run with a single to left field in the second. Jeremy Farrar, who walked to lead off the inning, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Collin Henderson and then stole third before scoring on Reddinger's single.
The game remained 2-0 until the sixth inning when the Cougs scored three runs with three hits. Reddinger drove home his second and third runs when he tripled to left center to score Farrar and Grant Richardson. Justin McClure then singled down the right field line to score Reddinger.
USC's only run came in the top of the ninth when Cyle Hankerd hit a single to right to drive home Joey Metropoulos, who led off the inning with a single three batters earlier.
WSU will travel to Spokane Tuesday to take on Gonzaga for the fourth of five meetings the Cougars are scheduled to play against the Bulldogs. The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. at Avista Stadium. Washington State will return to Bailey-Brayton Field Friday for the first of a three-game conference series against Arizona State.
