Jordan Schwikert To Join NCAA Champion Bruins in 2005
April 19, 2004
Los Angeles, Calif. - The two-time defending NCAA champion UCLA Women's Gymnastics team has signed former elite gymnast Jordan Schwikert (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial HS) for the 2005 season. Schwikert, who signed a national letter of intent last week, will join her sister, U.S. Olympian Tasha Schwikert, as well as Lindsey Vanden Eykel, in the fall.
J. Schwikert, who trains under Cassie Rice at Gymcats in Las Vegas, was a U.S. junior national team member in 2001 after placing seventh in the all-around at the U.S. Championships. She also earned fourth place finishes on vault and bars and placed sixth on beam and seventh on floor. At the 2002 American Classic, she placed third in the all-around and on floor and second on beam. In her first international competition in 2002 at the Gymnix International in Montreal, Canada, she won the all-around and uneven bars titles.
A back injury kept her out of competition for parts of 2002 and all of 2003, but she returned in 2004 to win the all-around and uneven bars titles at the Level 10 State Championships. Schwikert also claimed the regional uneven bars title and placed second in the all-around, third on vault and beam and fourth on floor. She has qualified for the Level 10 National Championships, which will be held May 1.
'We are extremely excited to add Jordan Schwikert to our list of freshmen coming in next season,' said UCLA head coach Valorie Kondos Field. 'She had to overcome a serious injury and surgery and has patiently worked through the last two years to be able to come back in the sport of gymnastics.'
The two sisters on the same team will be a first for UCLA gymnastics.
'Jordan and Tasha have a tremendous athleticism and competitiveness reminiscent of the Williams sisters in tennis,' noted Kondos Field. 'We look forward to them, along with Lindsey Vanden Eykel, picking up next year where this year's championship team left off.'
