Rivalry Continues Between No. 2 Cal and No. 5 Washington
April 19, 2004
This Week: The Bears host longtime rival Washington this weekend at 9 a.m. at Redwood Shores. The two teams come into this highly anticipated race ranked in the Top 5 in the country and looking to win the coveted Schoch Cup. In the most recent meeting between the two, Cal defeated the Huskies in the Copley Cup grand final at the San Diego Crew Classic, held April 3-4. Last year, the Bears and Huskies ended the dual races with a split, with Cal winning the varsity eight and freshman eight races, and Washington taking the varsity four and second varsity eight races.
History of Bears vs. Huskies: This weekend's dual race between the Washington and California is the 101st in the longtime rivalry between the two schools. The first race was held in 1903 in Washington. The race was only a mile and a half, and was straight fours (no coxswains). Washington finished first in the inaugural race with a time of 9:33, with Cal about three lengths behind. The race was the first interstate collegiate regatta west of the Rockies, and the beginning of one of the best collegiate rivalries in the country. What makes this rivalry one of the best is that the two schools are perennial powerhouses. Both have won numerous national championships and Pac-10 titles, and collectively they have dominated the San Diego Crew Classic. In the 31 years of the Crew Classic, the Copley Cup has only been won by a school other than Cal or Washington only 11 times.
Oregon State Dual Recap: Even amidst the rain and hail, the No. 2 ranked Bears were able sweep all races over the weekend against No. 13 Oregon State. The varsity eight boat battled torrential rains throughout the race to finish over four seconds ahead of the Beavers. The second varsity boat was able to overcome the elements to finish seven seconds ahead of Oregon State. The freshmen cruised to an easy nine-second victory. With their wins over OSU, the varsity eight and freshman eight remain undefeated this season. The second varsity eight's only loss this year was at the San Diego Crew Classic, where it finished second to Washington.
