Bruins to Send Four Players to Pac-10 Championships . . .
UCLA will be competing in the Pac-10 section of the 104th Ojai Valley Tennis Championships, Apr. 22-25 at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club (Thur.-Sat.) and Libbey Park (Sun.) in Ojai, Calif. The Bruins have three singles players and one doubles team participating. Freshman Daniela Bercek and sophomore Laura Gordon will be playing main draw singles, while Nina Yaftali is entered in the Invitational singles draw. UCLA's History at Ojai . . .
Sara Walker was the last Bruin to capture a Pac-10 singles title, winning it all as a freshman back in 2000. In addition to Walker, three other Bruins have captured won singles titles at the Pac-10 Championships, including Jane Thomas (1987), Keri Phebus (1995) and Annica Cooper (1998). In doubles, Walker and Mariko Fritz-Krockow were the last UCLA team to capture a Pac-10 doubles title when they did it back in 2001. Other past Bruin winners include: Mamie Ceniza/Stella Sampras (1989), Kim Po/Stella Sampras (1991) and Keri Phebus/Paige Yaroshuk (1996).
Bruins Finish Third in Pac-10 Standings . . .
With a 6-2 record, UCLA finished in third place behind Stanford and USC in the final Pac-10 standings. The Bruins' only losses were to both those teams, as UCLA posted victories over Cal, Washington, Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon and Washington State.

Bruins Fall to Stanford, Come From Behind to Defeat Cal, 4-3 . . .
Playing its final match of the regular season last Saturday, UCLA battled back from a 3-1 deficit to come back and beat No. 10 Cal, 4-3. The Bruins lost the doubles point and suffered losses at Nos. 4 and 6 singles. Only sophomore Laura Gordon at the No. 5 position managed to get a singles victory early on. With just three matches still playing, the Bruins needed wins in all three to get the victory. UCLA got the wins it needed, as Daniela Bercek, Jackie Carleton and Sarah Gregg all won three-set matches. A day earlier, top-ranked Stanford posted a 5-2 victory over the Bruins at the LATC.
UCLA in the Rankings . . .
Although UCLA's only loss last week was to top-ranked Stanford, the Bruins fell two spaces from No. 6 to No. 8 this week. New individual rankings were also released this week. Sophomore Jackie Carleton leads the list of Bruin players ranked in singles, checking in at No. 16. She is followed by No. 30 Daniela Bercek and No. 123 Alex McGoodwin, who has remained in the rankings despite not playing since Feb. 13. In doubles, Bercek and Lauren Fisher check in at No. 18. Carleton and Feriel Esseghir are ranked No. 22.

Gordon on a Roll . . .
Sophomore Laura Gordon is on a five-match winning streak, including a pair of dominating performances against the Bay Area schools last weekend. Against top-ranked Stanford last Friday, Gordon easily cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over 75th-ranked Emilia Anderson at the No. 6 position. Playing at the No. 5 position a day later against Cal, Gordon nearly duplicated that performance, registering a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Jody Scheldt. Gordon is currently 18-11 overall and 14-8 in dual-match play.
Bercek Adjusting to No. 1 Position . . .
Freshman Daniela Bercek played her first-ever match at the No. 1 singles position on Apr. 10 against Washington State, defeating Lorena Arias, 6-3, 6-4. Bercek then faced off against 10th-ranked Amber Liu of Stanford last Friday, falling in three sets 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-3. She rebounded a day later to upset fourth-ranked Raquel Kops-Jones, 6-3, 0-6, 7-5. Bercek, who has played at the No. 2 position for most of the year, owns an overall record of 19-4, including a 16-3 mark in dual-match play.
Following Ojai . . .
Although it will not officially be determined until early May, UCLA will likely be one of 16 schools selected to host an NCAA Regional, May 14-16. One winner from each regional will advance to the 16-team NCAA Championships, May 20-23 in Athens, Ga. The NCAA Individual Championships will take place from May 24-29, also in Georgia.
