Garrett Alwert Named Pacific-10 Pitcher Of The Week
April 20, 2004
PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State's Garrett Alwert was named Pacific-10 Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 13-19 by Commissioner Tom Hansen for his starting performance in WSU's 5-1 victory over USC Sunday, April 18. The Pitcher of the Week honor is the first for Alwert and the 25th selection all-time for WSU.
'It's definitely a great honor because there are a lot of great pitchers in the Pac-10,' Alwert said.
The senior co-captain held USC scoreless over eight innings of work, allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out five batters. He held the Trojans to a .143 batting average. Alwert's record is now 2-1 on the season with an overall ERA of 5.50, recording 25 strikeouts.
In conference games, Alwert is ranked third in the Pac-10 in earned run average at 3.24, and sixth in opposing batting average at .242.
'I am very happy for Garrett,' WSU Pitching Coach Ryan Brust said. 'It's a great honor for Garrett and our pitching staff. He is the second pitcher this year to be named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week, and it's a testament of the work they put in every week to get themselves ready to pitch.
'Brandon Reddinger deserves a lot of credit as well,' Brust added. 'He does a great job of handling our pitchers and calling the games.'
