Stanford's Putnam and Washington State's Alwert Named Pac-10 Player and Pitcher of the Week

STANFORD'S DANNY PUTNAM NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK
WASHINGTON STATE'S GARRETT ALWERT NAMED PITCHER OF THE WEEK
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -STANFORD junior outfielder Danny Putnam and WASHINGTON STATE senior left-handed pitcher Garrett Alwert, have been named Pac-10 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 13-19, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Putnam, from Escondido, Calif., batted at a .500 clip (8-for-16) with a triple, three home runs, five runs scored, a stolen base and 10 RBI in a defeat of Santa Clara and a three game sweep of California last week. His slugging percentage reached 1.188 to go along with a .579 on-base percentage. In the field, he was perfect on 11 chances. Putnam's best performance came in the 7-4 victory over Cal on Apr. 17, where he went 3-for-4 at the plate, knocking two home runs and driving in a season-high five runs. It was the fourth two-homer game of his career.
Alwert, from Puyallup, Wash., held USC scoreless over eight innings of work in the Cougars 5-1 win on Apr. 18. In only his third start of the year, Alwert held USC batters to a .143 average allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out five. Alwert is now 2-1 on the season with a 5.50 ERA and 25 strikeouts.
The Player of the Week honor is the second in Putnam's career and the 55th all-time selection for Stanford. The Pitcher of the Week honor is the first-ever for Alwert and the 25th selection all-time for Washington State.
