No. 24 Arizona Completes Day One at Pac-10 Tournament

OJAI, Calif. - The No. 24 Arizona men's tennis team completed the first and second rounds of the Pac-10 Championships, Thursday, April 22. Arizona earned two wins in the Main Draw Singles, while earning an additional three wins in the Invitational rounds.
In the main draw of the competition, junior Colin O'Grady and sophomore Roger Matalonga each earned a first round victory. O'Grady upset No. 17 Sven Swinnen of Oregon, in a three set marathon, 7-6(4), 6-7(1), 7-6(2). No. 84 Matalonga earned his 23rd victory of the year, tying Steven Capriati's mark in 2002, as he defeated Daniel Chu of Washington, 7-6,4-6,6-3. Also in the first round, senior Whi Kim fell to No. 71 Manuel Kost of Oregon, 6-4, 6-3. Sophomore Daniel Andrus lost to No. 6 Alex Vlaski, 6-2, 6-4.
O'Grady and Matalonga could not continue their momentum from the morning as the two Wildcats fell in the second round. O'Grady fell to No. 70 Balazs Veress of California, 7-5, 6-1. Matalonga forced the third set in his second round match against Patrick Briaud of California after losing the first set, 6-4, and winning the second, 2-6. In the third up a break, set he was forced to retire due to illness and fell in the match, 6-4, 2-6, 1-3 Ret. (ill).
In the invitational rounds, sophomore Tim Mullane and junior Paul Warkentin earned first round wins. Mullane defeated John Pettite of California, 6-4, 6-4. Warkentin easily dropped Eric McKean of Stanford, 6-3, 6-2, to collect his 20th win of the season and pushed his winning streak to nine. Freshman Zach Bromberg, looking for his first win in Pac-10 competition fell to Chris Surapol of UCLA, 6-2, 6-3. Freshman Nate Cochrane also had his eyes set on his first Pac-10 win, but fell to Aaron Spencer of Oregon, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
In the second round, Warkentin continued his winning ways earning his tenth-straight win, as he beat Nick Hegarty of Arizona State for the second time in a week, 7-5, 6-2. Warkentin is set to face Aaron Yovan of UCLA, Friday at 12:00 p.m. in the semifinals of the Invitational rounds.
The Wildcats will hit the courts again tomorrow, Friday, April 23, in the doubles portion of the competition, as well as continue singles play.
