Sumantri Leads Huskies On Day One of Pac-10 Championships
April 22, 2004
OJAI, Calif. -Junior Dea Sumantri hit her way into the quarterfinals of the Pac-10 Championships this afternoon, providing a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing day for Washington's women's tennis team on day one of the four-day tournament. The Huskies had five women entered in the main singles draw, however all but Sumantri suffered first-round defeats against very difficult competition.
Sumantri (Jakarta, Indonesia) faced a tough test in the first round Thursday morning against Oregon's Courtney Nagle. Nagle took the first set 6-4, before Sumantri fought back to win the final two sets 6-3, 6-4, and moved on to second round action later in the day. On paper, Sumantri's second round opponent, Emilia Anderson of Stanford, looked to be an even tougher matchup, as Anderson is the nation's 72nd-ranked player. But Sumantri would drop only three games to the Cardinal, prevailing 6-2, 6-1 to advance to Friday's quarterfinal round where she will take on Arizona's No. 14 Dianne Hollands, who beat the Husky in three sets when Washington and Arizona met in dual play this year.
The rest of Washington's main draw singles lineup all went down in the first round. Senior All-American Claire Carter, ranked 28th, was upset in three sets by 77th-ranked Anca Anastasiu of USC. UW's other senior, 66th-ranked Erin Hoe, lost in straight sets to No. 12 Alice Barnes of Stanford. 30th-ranked UCLA Bruin Daniela Bercek ousted sophomore Dinka Hadzic, 7-5, 6-1, and freshman Saskia Nauenberg lost 6-3, 6-1 to the nation's No. 3 player, Raquel Kops-Jones of Cal.
Husky sophomore Stephanie Svanfeldt remains alive in the Singles Invitational Draw, picking up a win over Arizona's Kasia Jakowlew in the second round. Juniors Mugette Ahn and Megan Flynn both fell in the second round of the Invitational draw.
Tomorrow play resumes with the quarterfinals of the Main and Invitational singles brackets, as well as the first and second rounds of doubles play. Washington is represented in doubles by the ninth-ranked duo of Carter and Sumantri as well as Hadzic and Hoe.
