UW's Blaty Eighth After First Day of Oregon Invite Decathlon

April 22, 2004

EUGENE, Ore. - Washington sophomore Doug Blaty jump-started the Huskies' competition Thursday at the Oregon Invitational, ranking eighth through one day of decathlon competition. The Coeur D'Alene native, in his first year at Washington since transferring from Oregon, will wrap up the decathlon Friday, before his teammates join in for the main portion of the meet Saturday.

With just five events in the books, Blaty has already accumulated 3,282 points, one hundred more than his previous first-day best of 3,146, set earlier this season. Unattached athlete Bryan Anderson leads with 3,955 points, followed by unattached athlete Andrew Levin at 3,845, Idaho's Jerome Richardson at 3,837, and former Oregon NCAA champion Santiago Lorenzo, at 3,831.

Blaty's strong opening day can be credited to impressive performances on the track, where his marks of 11.25 for 100 meters and 52.47 for 400 meters each marked personal bests, and earned scores over 700 points.

Multi-events will continue Friday at 12:20 p.m., with the main body of the meet scheduled for Saturday. Washington will also have athletes in competition Friday at the Drake Relays, which conclude Saturday. For complete results of the Oregon Invitational multi-events, visit www.goducks.com.
