Arias/Martinez Etch Names in Cougar History To End Season on High Note
April 23, 2004
OJAI, Calif. - Washington State's Lorena Arias and partner Chris Martinez captured their ninth doubles victory on the season and number 46 of their career, Friday at the Pac-10 Women's Tennis Championships, to share the No. 1 spot in career doubles victories along with two former Cougars.
The power pair played in their first match together since February 20 and knocked off Jackie Carleton and Laura Gordon of UCLA, 8-6 to seal the record.
'We went into the match as we would any other,' Arias said. 'It's nice to have a record, but more importantly we played hard and we won.'
Martinez added, 'I'm happy for Lorena, she will have such a good memory of Washington State.'
The 20 year old record is also held by Binky Lehto and Brenda Tate who captured it in 1982-84.
Arias and Martinez went on to lose in the quarterfinal round to Stanford's Emilia Anderson and Anne Yelsey, 8-2.
In singles invitational action, Zsofia Fodor fell in the quarterfinals to Joanna Kao of Stanford, 6-3, 6-1. Despite her loss in singles Fodor and partner Orsolya Sallai found success in invitational doubles as they put down Kao and Jessica Leck of Stanford, 8-1. The pair went on to lose to Southern California's Bernadette Bayani and Melissa Esmero in the quarterfinal round, 8-0.
Cougar pair Zorana Roganovic and Nelly Dvornicka were defeated by Cal's Jessica Shu and Monica Wiesener, 9-7, in the first round. The pair also fell in the back draw round to Dominika Dieskova and Anna Leksinska of Oregon, 8-5.
Nora Gaal and Amy Toth had similar success as the Cougar tandem was dropped by Mugette Ahn and Saskia Nauenberg, 8-5 in the first round and then went on to lose to Wendy Pilecka and Cindy Sureephong, 8-5, in the back draw round.
'We ended our season on a positive note,' Washington State Head Coach Lisa Hart said. 'We will build on the success we had here at the tournament and the success we had this season when we begin play again next fall.'
The 2003-04 Cougars compiled a 5-15 record overall, with a 1-7 mark in the Pac-10.
