Cal Second At Penn Relays

April 23, 2004

Philadelphia, P.A. - California's 4x100 meter relay team (sophomore Osarhiemen Omwanghe, sophomore transfer Tiffany Johnson, Shannan Hawes, and sophomore Antonette Carter) made a place for itself in front of the nation with a second place finish (45.52) at Penn Relays. Cal finished second only to Stanford and ahead of Houston, Clemson, Howard, Middle Tennessee State, Georgia State and St. Augustine's.

'After yesterday we didn't run well and we were pleased we got an opportunity to run with it and we made the most of it. It bodes well for next weekend (the Big Meet),' head coach Chris Huffins said. The women had finished fourth in their preliminary heat with a time of 46.13, well off their season-best (and second-best all-time at Cal) of 45.31.

In the men's 4x100 meter relays, Cal (senior Nick Mazur, freshman Darren Woods, junior Toby Atawo and senior Ricci Dula) finished third in its heat with a 41.00 second time to qualify for tomorrow's finals. It was a tight finish as the second-place team, Alabama State, finished in 40.94.

'I think that we have a couple injuries that we are nursing and I'm not sure whether we are going to run tomorrow in the final,' Huffins said. 'But overall we have been pleased with this trip.'

Sophomore Teak Wilburn and junior David Glasgow will compete tomorrow in the championship section of the high jump.
