Cougars Aiming To Prove Themselves At Arizona In Pac-10 Championships

What's Happening This Week: The Washington State men's golf team head to Tucson, Ariz. that takes place April 26-28 at the Gallery at Dove Mountain North Course, a par 72 and 7,412 yard course.

Scoring Format: Teams will play 36 holes Monday and 18 both Tuesday and Wednesday for a total of 72...twosomes will start off holes 1 and 10 at 7 a.m. PDT Monday and 7:30 a.m. Tuesday and Wednesday...the low five scores from a team of six players will count towards the team total.

The Field: The 10 team field includes six teams ranked in the top 25 and nine teams in the top 100 according to Golfstat...the field consists of: Arizona, Arizona State, California, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA, USC, Washington, Washington State.

WSU Lineup at Pac-10 Championships: Ryan Camp, Jordan Madison, Kevin Chen, Chad Carlson, Ben Bryson, and Matt Fladwood.

Last Year at the Pac-10 Championships: The Cougars finished in 10th place last season at the Oakmont Country Club at Glendale, Calif...both Ryan Camp and Ryan Ressa led the team tying for 32nd by shooting a 15-over 303...UCLA took the team championship with John Merrick winning the event with a 12-under 276.

Head Coach Walt Williams, on the Pac-10 Championships and Team: 'We've never played the course so we don't know a lot about it. Ryan Camp should play well. His experience should help him. I hope he just goes out there and has fun and finishes well. Jordan Madison, Kevin Chen, and Matt Fladwood are all making their first Pac-10 Championship debut. They've been working really hard and want to prove they belong. We want them to get off to a great start. Ben Bryson and Chad Carlson are both making their second Pac-10 appearance. Hopefully their experience will pay off and they will play well. We're definitely going to go down there and try to surprise some people.'

What Happened Last Tournament: Ryan Camp finished tied for 29th while the Cougars finished in 16th place at the U.S. Intercollegiate.

Lone Senior: Ryan Camp will make his final appearance at the Pac-10s this an All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention selection in 2002-03, Camp has had an impressive tenure as a Cougar...Camp currently sits tied for fifth on WSU's all-time career top 10 finishes list with seven and is tied for fourth all-time with 19 top 25 finishes...he earned his first career victory this spring with a win at the Inland Intercollegiate...Camp currently holds a 74.3 career scoring average and a 73.8 average for the season...his 73.6 scoring average in 2002-03 is his season best and ranks fifth all-time on WSU's lowest single season scoring average...Camp's score of 65 Sept. 7, 2002 in the Badger Invitational at Madison, Wis. tied the lowest single scoring round in school history, which was recently broken by Kevin Chen...Camp was also named an All-Pac-10 Academic Honorable Mention in 2002...his 140 career rounds ranks second only behind Dustin White's 144 in WSU's rounds played.

Williams on Camp and Career: 'We will definitely be sad to see him go. He has been a very good and solid player for the last four years. He is a great kid and leader for this team. His number of events and rounds played just shows how consistent he has been. It's a tremendous accomplishment to have played in that many. He has been a great Cougar.'

Young Guns: With three freshmen playing in the scoring six for the Cougars, this marks the seventh time this season that WSU has had three freshman in the scoring lineup...Chen recently fired the school record low round of 64 March 15 in the Bearkat Classic at Sam Houston, Texas.

Head Cougars: Coach Walt Williams is in his sixth year as head coach at 2002, Williams was selected as Pac-10 Coach of the Year while leading his team to the NCAA West Regionals...Williams has helped four different golfers earn All Pac-10 honors and has had five different earn All Pac-10 Academic honors...assistant coach Heather Holte is in her third year at WSU...Holte played Pac-10 golf for the University of Oregon and graduated in 1997...she is now an amateur player at Oregon...Ryan Ressa has been added to the Cougar coaching staff as an assistant this year...Ressa played for WSU in the 2002-03 season.
