Cougars Suffer 17-5 Loss To No. 18 Arizona State

April 23, 2004

Washington State's Kaeo Rubin went 3-for-4 with a solo home run, but the Cougars needed more than that as they lost to No. 18 Arizona State 17-5 Friday at Bailey-Brayton Field in a Pacific-10 Conference baseball game.

WSU (22-14, 4-6 Pac-10) starting pitcher Aaron MacKenzie (5-4) took the loss, allowing 12 runs, nine earned, and nine hits while striking out three batters over 3.1 innings.

Jeff Mousser (3-3) pitched a complete game for ASU (27-12, 6-7 Pac-10), allowing nine hits and five runs, all earned.

With 17 hits, the Sun Devils scored 17 runs in the first four innings aided by four WSU errors. ASU sent 14 batters to the plate in a 10-run fourth inning and collected nine hits off of MacKenzie and relief pitchers Brett Sommer and James Freeman.

Facing a three-run deficit in the bottom of the first WSU scored two runs when Zach McAngus drove home Rubin with a bases-loaded fielder's choice grounder and Jason Freeman scored on a balk.

The Cougars added single runs in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings. Grant Richardson hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth to score Freeman, who led off the inning with a double. In the eighth inning Rubin hit a solo homer and in the ninth Shawn Evenhus singled to left field to score McAngus, who doubled to lead off the inning.

ASU scored three runs to start the game with two hits and two WSU errors. Joe Persichina hit a sacrifice fly to score Dustin Pedroia following a Cougar error. With the bases-loaded, Jeff Larish singled through the left-side, scoring Chris Cook and Nick Walsh.

The Sun Devils extended their lead 5-2 in the second when Pedoria hit a two-run home run, scoring Josh Asanovich, then added two more runs in the third. Asanovich came home on Walsh's fielder's choice grounder and Tuffy Gosewisch scored when the Cougars threw the ball away at first base attempting a double play.

Cook led off ASU's 10-run fourth with a solo home run. Walsh and Asanovich each singled home runs, Buck drove home two runs with a single and Gosewisch doubled home three runs with a two-out bases loaded hit to right field.

The Cougars will face ASU at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bailey-Brayton field for the second of the three-game conference series.
