Lam Advances to Pac-10 Semifinals

Ojai, Calif. - UCLA junior Chris Lam won his quarterfinal singles match Friday, becoming the last remaining Bruin in the main draw at the Pac-10 Tennis Championships at Ojai's Libbey Park.
UCLA began the day with both Alberto Francis and Lam in the main draw quarterfinals. Lam defeated Cal's Balazs Veress, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4, setting up a semifinal showdown with Stanford's Sam Warburg on Saturday. Francis wasn't as fortunate, falling to Washington's Alex Vlaski, 6-3, 6-3. Vlaski has been the singles runner-up at this event the past two years.
The Bruins have dominated the Pac-10 Invitational draw, placing three players in the semifinals. Top-seeded Philipp Gruendler advanced Friday with a 6-3, 6-0 decision over Washington's Michael Ricks. Waiting for Gruendler in the semifinals will be Stanford's Carter Morris. In the bottom half of the draw, sophomore Aaron Yovan defeated Arizona's Paul Warkentin, 6-3, 6-0., while fellow sophomore Chris Surapol defeated ASU's Daniel Davies. Yovan and Surapol will play face off on Saturday for a spot in the final.
Doubles action began Friday, as top-seeded Francis and Kris Kwinta of UCLA fell in the first round to Cal's Tyler Browne/Daniel Sebescen, 8-5. In the bottom half of the draw, Gruendler and Luben Pampoulov advanced with a 9-8(7) decision over Oregon's Manuel Kost, Markus Schiller. Gruendler and Pampoulov will next face Washington's Alex Slovic/Nick Weiss in a late afternoon quarterfinal match on Friday.
In the Pac-10 Invitational doubles draw, top-seeded Lam and Surapol had a bye in the first round and will take on Stanford's Eric McKean/Chris Rasmussen later Friday. Jason Nguyen and Yovan lost in the first round to Oregon's Thomas Bieri/Chris King, 8-4.
