April 23, 2004
CORVALLIS, Ore. - No. 16 ranked Oregon State University dropped a 9-1 contest in five innings against top-ranked Arizona in Friday's Pacific-10 Conference softball showdown.
The Beavers fall to 36-16 on the season and 2-8 in Pac-10 action, while Arizona improves to 44-1 and a perfect 8-0 in conference play.
A trio of hits to open the game helped Arizona take a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Wendy Allen's 2-RBI double to left-center field put the Wildcats in front.
UA added three more runs in the second inning, taking advantage of a pair of walks which forced Beaver starter Monica Hoffman (18-10) out of the game, and then capitalizing on an infield single and another double by Allen.
OSU narrowed the margin to 5-1 in the bottom of the second when Brianne McGowan scored on a wild pitch from Arizona ace Alicia Hollowell (31-0). McGowan drew a walk to lead-off the inning and the Beavers loaded the bases when Sherina Galvan walked and Natalie Johnson was hit by a pitch.
Oregon State reliever Ta'Tyana McElroy sat the Wildcats down in order in the third inning, but UA responded with three runs in the fourth on three hits, an error, and a walk, to make the margin 8-1.
Caitlin Lowe belted a two-out double down the right field line in the top of the fifth inning that scored Crystal Farley and Allen entered the game in relief, retiring the Beavers in order in the bottom of the inning to seal the victory.
Hollowell tallied seven strikeouts and earned her second career no-hitter against the Beavers despite allowing five walks.
'They (Arizona) have a great pitcher (Hollowell),' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'Offensively I thought we did a good job of staying off the rise-ball, but Arizona is a great team.'
McElroy had two strikeouts in four innings of work for OSU.
The Beavers look to break a four-game losing streak when they host Arizona State University on Saturday at 2 p.m.
