Sun Devil Duo Reach Semifinals of Pac-10 Tennis Doubles Tournament

April 23, 2004

TEMPE, Ariz. - The second day of play at the Pac-10 Tennis Championships concluded Friday evening with one singles player and three doubles teams competing for the Arizona State men's team at the conference event being held in Ojai, Calif. Unfortunately for the Sun Devils, only one doubles tandem survived to fight another day.

In doubles play, the team of Jonathan Kinsella (So., Astley, England) and Chris Stewart (Sr., Adelaide, Australia) paired up to enter the main draw of the tournament where they met the USC team of Parker Collins and Ruben Torres in the first round. In a very close dual, the Sun Devil duo pulled out a 9-8 (4) victory to advance to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, California's duo of Tyler Browne and Daniel Sesbescan did not show, giving Kinsella and Stewart a walk-over win. The Sun Devils will now face Stanford's K.C. Corkery and James Pade in the semifinals Saturday for a shot at the conference title.

Another duo in the main draw did not have as much luck. Daniel Davies (So., Sydney, Australia) and Clinton Letcher (Jr., Melbourne, Australia) opened the tournament with a loss as the No. 11 duo in the nation, Patrick Briaud and Balazs Veress of California, handed the Sun Devils an 8-4 decision. In the doubles invitational draw, ASU's Christopher Biro (Fr., Adelaide, Australia) and Ryan McBride (So., Tempe, Ariz.) used a bye in the first round to reach the quarterfinals where they were handed an 8-5 defeat at the hands of Oregon's Thomas Bieri and Chris King.

In singles play, Davies used two wins to reach the quarterfinals where he dropped a three set decision to Chris Surapol of UCLA. Davies took the first set before Surapol won the remaining two for a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory.

Play at the championships runs Saturday and Sunday. Complete brackets can be found at
