April 24, 2004

EUGENE, Ore. - The Arizona softball team traveled to No. 13 Oregon on Saturday, outscoring the Ducks 6-1 to extend their undefeated Pac-10 winning streak to nine games. Alicia Hollowell pitched her 32nd win for the Cats without a loss, striking out 12 of 25 batters.

The Wildcats struck early, taking a one-run lead in the top of the first when Wendy Allen went yard off Oregon pitcher Ani Nyhus for her seventh of the year. The Ducks tied it up in their half of the inning, when leadoff hitter Jenn Poore homered for Oregon's only run of the day. Hollowell struck out the next three batters to end the inning.

The game remained tied until the fifth inning, when Samantha Quintero hit a two-out single to the right side. Crystal Farley singled and Caitlin Lowe walked to load the bases. Autumn Champion had an RBI hit to shortstop, leaving the bases juiced for Allen, who walked to score the second run of the inning. Mackenzie Vandergeest singled and advanced to third on an error by Oregon leftfielder Dani Baird, clearing the bases. The Ducks brought in relief pitcher Amy Harris, who struck out Kristie Fox to end the inning with the Cats up, 6-1.

Hollowell pitched all seven innings for Arizona, adding 12 strikeouts to put her season total at 389, just five Ks short of her own single-season record. She allowed one earned run on three hits, putting her ERA at 0.95.

The Wildcats will take on Oregon again on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Eugene.
