No. 3 UCLA Overpowers No. 4 California In Westwood, 5-1
April 24, 2004
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - No. 3 UCLA came out swinging Saturday afternoon, taking a 5-1 Pac-10 win over No. 4 California at Easton Stadium. The Bears had just three hits against the Bruins, two of them in the second inning to score California's lone run.
Freshman P Lisa Dodd improved to 12-2 for UCLA (30-7 overall, 3-6 in the Pac-10) while senior P Keira Goerl picked up her second save of the season, relieving Dodd after five innings of work. Junior P Kelly Anderson (20-7) took the loss for California (38-9 overall, 5-6 in the Pac-10), allowing nine hits, four runs and a walk through five innings. Freshman P Sarah Adams came on in relief to close out the game.
A two-run first inning got the Bruins' confidence up, sparked by a leadoff single from senior CF Stephanie Ramos, who then advanced to second on a one-out single by sophomore 2B Caitlin Benyi and scored on a single from senior 1B Claire Sua that deflected off Anderson before sneaking through the left side of the diamond and into the grass, scoring UCLA's first run of the game. Sophomore C Emily Zaplatosch followed with a two-out single to right, scoring Benyi to give UCLA a 2-0 lead after one inning.
California started a rally of its own in the top of the second inning with a lead off single by sophomore C Haley Woods, who was then lifted for junior pinch runner Kristen Bayless. Bayless went to second on a sacrifice bunt from junior 2B Jessica Pamanian and scored on a double by junior SS Chelsea Spencer to bring the Bears to within one, 2-1.
But the Bruins remained focused, adding two additional runs to their lead in the top of the fifth inning, as sophomore 3B Andrea Duran drew a four-pitch walk with one out to give UCLA its first base runner of the rally. Duran came around to score on a double to the left center wall off Benyi's bat, with Benyi then taking third on an errant throw from the California outfield. A well-executed suicide squeeze bunt by Sua scored Benyi to give the Bruins a 4-1 lead through five frames.
Ramos knocked a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to increase UCLA's lead, 5-1.
California and UCLA battle again tomorrow, Sunday, April 25, to complete the weekend UC series. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. at Easton Stadium.
