Oregon State Evens Pac-10 Series With 4-3 Decision Against USC

LOS ANGELES - Kevin Gunderson struck out Michael Moon with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and the tying run at second as the Oregon State Beavers evened its Pac-10 Conference series with a 4-3 win over the USC Trojans at Dedeaux Field. Gunderson faced his only batter in relief of starter Dallas Buck, who allowed three runs in 8 2/3 innings for the Beavers.
Oregon State improved to 25-12 on the season and 5-6 in Pac-10 play. USC is now 20-20 on the season and 6-5 in conference. The Trojans are now tied for third place with UCLA, one game behind Washington.
Beaver first baseman Cole Gillespie went 3-for-4, including his first home run of the season when he hit a solo shot to center off USC starter Bret Butler in the third. Designated hitter Mike Lissman added an RBI double, giving OSU a 2-0 lead.
USC tied the game in the fourth, thanks to a two-run homer by sophomore catcher Jeff Clement. It was Clement's eighth home run of the season as he went 2-for-3 on the afternoon.
In the top of the eighth with two outs, Aaron Mathews tripled to right off reliever Josh Rummonds (2-3) to score Lissman for the go-ahead run. Paul Richie added the eventual game-winning run with an RBI single, plating Mathews.
The Trojans attempted a rally in the ninth. With a runner at second and a 1-2 count, Jon Brewster doubled to right to make it a 4-3 lead for the Beavers. Freshman Cyle Hankerd struck out before Gunderson came in to end the game.
Buck (3-3) scattered seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Butler had a strong start for the Trojans, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts for the no-decision.
