LOS ANGELES - UCLA Softball (30-7, 3-6 Pac-10) won its 30th game of the season on Saturday afternoon at Easton Stadium with a 5-1 victory over No. 5 California (38-9, 5-6 Pac-10). Stephanie Ramos and Caitlin Benyi both had 3-for-4 days for the Bruins as Lisa Dodd earned the win and Keira Goerl was credited with the save.
UCLA's Women's Gymnastics team, which won its fourth NCAA Championship in a five-year span last Friday night in Pauley Pavilion with the majority of the Bruin softball team in attendance, was honored in a pre-game ceremony as Honda Award Nominee Jeanette Antolin threw the ceremonial first pitch. After the gymnasts received a hearty ovation from the Easton Stadium crowd, the Bruin softball team powered through the top of the first inning as starting pitcher Lisa Dodd tossed a nine-pitch first inning, retiring the Golden Bears in order.
The Bruin offense responded in the bottom half of the inning as Stephanie Ramos led off with a single, advanced to second on a one-out single by Caitlin Benyi and scored on a single by Claire Sua that deflected off of California starting pitcher Kelly Anderson before sneaking through the left side of the diamond into the grass, scoring UCLA's first run of the game. Emily Zaplatosch followed with a two-out single to right field, scoring Benyi to give UCLA the 2-0 lead after one inning.
In the top of the second inning, Cal started a rally of its own with a lead off single by Haley Woods, who was replaced by pinch runner Kristen Bayless. Bayless went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jessica Pamanian and scored on a double by Chelsea Spencer to bring Cal within one at 2-1.
UCLA added to its lead in the top of the fifth inning, as Andrea Duran drew a four-pitch walk with one out in the inning. Duran came around to score on a double to the wall in left center by Caitlin Benyi, with Benyi taking third on an errant throw in from the outfield. A suicide squeeze bunt executed perfectly by Claire Sua scored Benyi to give the Bruins the 4-1 lead after five innings.
A two-out home run in the bottom of the seventh inning by Ramos increased UCLA's lead to 5-1. Andrea Duran followed with a single, but was unable to advance further as the Bruins took the four-run lead to the top of the seventh inning, where Keira Goerl retired the Golden Bears in order to complete her second save of the season.
Lisa Dodd got the win in the circle, striking out two. She did not allow a walk in the game, and allowed just three hits in her 12th victory of the season.
The Bruins and Golden Bears complete the weekend series with a 1 pm game on Sunday at Easton Stadium.
