Softball Falls To No. 16 Oregon State, 6-0

April 24, 2004

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Kristin Farber stole her 31st base of the year to tie ASU's single-season record, but Arizona State (30-23; 0-9 Pac-10) still could not plate a run and was limited to three hits as No. 16 Oregon State (37-16; 3-8 Pac-10) won 6-0 Saturday in Corvallis.

The Sun Devils got a pair of runners on base in the opening frame but McGowan used a pair of strikeouts to get out of the inning unscathed.

OSU put two runners on in the bottom half of the inning as Mia Longfellow reached on an error and Vanessa Iapala drew a two-out walk. After executing a double steal, sophomore Lisa Allen drove a single up the middle to score Longfellow. Iapala was thrown out at the plate by Farber, but the damage was done and the Beavers held a 1-0 lead.

Oregon State used a pair of hits in the third inning to push its advantage to 2-0 when Longfellow crossed the plate after a passed ball.

The Beavers broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Ingrid Lochelt started things off with a bunt single and Longfellow followed with her second hit of the day. After Adrienne Alo drew a one-out walk, Iapala blasted a 2-RBI single to left-center field and knocked ASU starter Desiree Serrano (15-8) out of the contest. Allen followed with a 2-RBI double to right center field off reliever Bre DeSanta, making the score 6-0.

Farber, Valerie Sevilla and Trisha Tornberg had three hits for the Devils, while Phelan Wright was walked twice.

Up next, the Devils will finish the two-game series against Oregon State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
