UCLA Finishes in Dead Heat with LMU for Miller Cup

April 24, 2004

Ballona Creek - The UCLA women's rowing team competed in the 29th Annual Norman P. Miller Cup Regatta, today, winning the Second Varsity Eight, Novice Eight, and Varsity Four competitions and finishing in a dead heat for first place in the Miller Cup race. UCLA was crowned Miller Cup champions for the second-consecutive year, earning its 15th title since 1976.

The 2004 Miller Cup, hosted by the UCLA men's rowing program, featured Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, Novice Eight, and Varsity Four competitions with prelims to qualify for the Petite and Grand Finals. UCLA, Loyola Marymount, University of San Diego (USD), San Diego State, UC Irvine, and Orange Coast College all competed in the day's events.

Orange Coast raced only a varsity four and novice eight boat, while Loyola Marymount did not enter a novice eight boat. All other teams fielded a boat in each competition.

UCLA won each of its morning preliminary races to advance its varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice eight, and varsity four boats to the Grand Finals.

In the Miller Cup race, the Varsity Eight Grand Final, UCLA faced Loyola Marymount and USD. The Bruins got off to a quick start, gaining a few seats in the first 250 meters. UCLA led by about eight seats with less than 1000 meters to go, but the Lions started to walk up in the final sprint. The finish-line decision was too close to call, as the judges ruled the contest a tie. UCLA and LMU finished the 1750-meter race in 6:17.4 and were named 2004 Miller Cup co-champions. USD followed in third, finishing in 6:52.0.

The UCLA varsity eight consisted of Jessica Rogers (stroke), Liz Pallas-Jacobs, Jessica Fritz, Monica Grova, Dawn Regan, Lexi Harmon, Kristin Bixel, Irene Condella, and Emina Ong (cox).

UCLA competed against San Diego State and Loyola Marymount in the Second Varsity Eight Grand Final, winning the race by open water. The Bruins finished in 6:42.2, followed by San Diego State in 6:56.3, and Loyola Marymount in 6:58.7.

In the Novice Eight Grand Final, the Bruins defeated San Diego State by 3-seconds, finishing in 6:48.3. The Aztecs finished in 6:51.8, and Orange Coast followed in 7:18.6.

UCLA also won the Varsity Four competition, defeating Orange Coast and USD in the Grand Final. The Bruins won by open water in 7:43.9. Orange Coast placed second in 7:52.6, and USD followed in 7:58.2.

The Bruins return to action next Saturday, May 1, as they travel to Seattle, Wash. to compete at the Opening Day Regatta.
