WSU Comes Up Short 5-2 To No. 18 ASU

April 24, 2004

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State's starting pitcher Aaron Trolia held No.18 Arizona State to just two runs and six hits over seven innings, but the Cougars could not come up with timely hits late in the game as ASU won 5-2 Saturday at Bailey-Brayton Field in a Pacific-10 Conference baseball game.

'I am happy with the way we played baseball today,' Cougar head coach Tim Mooney said. 'We bounced back and played the way we should have today. Trolia pitched very well for us, and I thought we played good defense, we just needed some timely hits.'

Relief pitcher Wayne Daman Jr. (2-3) recorded the loss for WSU (22-15, 4-7 Pac-10), giving up four hits and three runs, all earned, in the final two innings.

Zechry Zinicola (4-2) earned the win for ASU (28-12, 7-7 Pac-10) by holding the Cougs scoreless for the final 2.2 innings while striking out three batters. Zinicola also drove home the eventual game winning run in the eighth inning with a sacrifice fly that scored Travis Buck.

WSU stranded 10 runners and in the fifth left the bases loaded when Urquidez struck out Jay Miller. WSU also had runners at second and third with one run in and just one out, but a strike out and a ground out ended the threat.

Buck gave ASU a 2-0 lead in the third inning when he hit a home run that scored Dustin Pedoria, who had doubled down the left-field line. Those were the Sun Devils first two hits.

WSU scored its first run in the fifth when pinch hitter Zach Kosturos singled to drive home Collin Henderson, who was hit by a pitch and advanced to third one batter later.

The Cougars tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth when Henderson hit a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt to score Grant Richardson, who singled to lead off the inning two batters earlier.

ASU secured its lead in the eighth following the sacrifice fly by Zincola when Tuffy Gosewisch hit a bases loaded sacrifice fly to score Jeff Larish.

The Sun Devils added to their lead with a single run in the ninth that came from a long single to right field by Larish drive home Pedoria, who singled to lead off the inning.

The Cougars will face ASU at noon Sunday at Bailey-Brayton Field for the final of the three-game conference series.
