Softball Tops No. 16 Oregon State, 7-2, For First Pac-10 Win
April 25, 2004
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Arizona State softball team (31-23; 1-9 Pac-10) earned their first Pac-10 victory of the season and Kristin Farber set the ASU single-season record for stolen bases (32) as the Sun Devils defeated No. 16 Oregon State (37-17; 3-9 Pac-10), 7-2, Sunday in Corvallis.
Poor fielding proved costly for the Beavers from the start as ASU took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning when Kristin Farber crossed the plate with an unearned run. OSU ended up committing four errors on the day. The Devils also turned two double plays.
The Sun Devils unloaded six more runs in the second inning, including a grand slam home run over the right field fence by Valerie Sevilla. Remarkably, it was Sevilla's third grand slam of the year and moved her into the team lead with 13 home runs.
Allen's second inning leadoff home run to center field narrowed the ASU lead to 7-1. OSU added its only other run when Vanessa Iapala ripped a double off the top of the right field fence to open the sixth inning and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from Kelly Petersen, making the final margin 7-2.
Sevilla led Arizona State with a 2-for-3 mark and four RBIs and Heidi Knabe hit her third double of the year. ASU also swiped three bases in the game by three different players. Ashley Werschky (7-6) pitched a solid game, picking up the complete game victory on five hits and two runs.
Up next, the Devils will travel to Tucson for a single game against Arizona on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
