Softball Travels To No. 1 Arizona On Wednesday; Hosts No. 10 Stanford And No. 4 California In Weekend Series

ON TAP: The Arizona State softball team (31-23; 1-9 Pac-10) will start off a busy week by travelling to Tucson to face No. 1 Arizona (45-2; 9-1 Pac-10) for a single game on Wednesday, April 28 at 7:00 p.m. The Sun Devils will then host No. 10 Stanford (38-12; 8-4 Pac-10) on Friday, April 30 at 7:00 p.m. and No. 4 California (38-10; 5-7 Pac-10) on Saturday, May 1 also at 7:00 p.m. as well as on Sunday, May 2 at 1:00 p.m.

THE SERIES: Arizona holds an 85-72 lead in the all-time series ... ASU last defeated UA back in the 2002 season (March 16) at the KIA Klassic Tournament in Fullerton, Calif. by a 3-0 score ... ASU's last Pac-10 Conference win against UA occurred on April 21, 2000 at Farrington Stadium by a 3-1 score ... in the past four years, including this year's games, Cal holds a slight 9-7 overall advantage, while ASU and Stanford are knotted at 7-7 ... Cal holds a 51-33 lead in the all-time series, while the Sun Devils carry a 28-15 all-time advantage against the Cardinal.

GREEK COACHES UNITE: Even though Cal head coach Diane Ninemire and ASU head coach Linda Wells will be looking to out do the other this weekend in Tempe, the two friends will unite after the season at the summer Olympic Games in Athens as softball coaches for the host Greek National Team. Wells, the Greek head coach, selected Ninemire to be her assistant for the 2004 games. Combined the two have over 45 years of coaching experience and have won over 1,620 games.

DEVIL NOTES: Bre DeSanta ranks 18th in the county in strikeouts per seven innings with 9.2 ... Kristin Farber is 19th in the country in stolen bases ... both Phelan Wright and Valerie Sevilla are ranked nationally in slugging percentage at 27th (.741) and 40th (.699), respectively ... Arizona State was picked to finish sixth in the 2004 Pac-10 Preseason Coaches Poll ... the opening game against Stephen F. Austin on January 30 was the earliest opening game, dating back to at least the mid 1980's and is the earliest opening game in head coach Linda Wells 15 years ... ASU is slated to play 65 regular season games this year, making it the most in Wells' tenure ... ASU pitchers are allowing just over five hits a game and striking out nearly eight ... ASU has won 30 or more games in nine consecutive seasons ... ASU fell out of the top-25 (April 7) for the first time in five years, since the first week of the 1999 season.
