Cal Hosts Stanford In Annual Big Row
This Week: The Bears will host Stanford in the annual Big Row at Redwood Shores. Racing is set to begin at 10 a.m. with the women's varsity four. In last year's Big Row, Cal swept all races against their cross-town rival. Cal leads the all-time series 53-18.
History of The Big Row: The Big Row dates back to 1902, and since that first race, the Bears have won 53 of the 71 races, including the last 13. Each year the two teams take to the water to bring home the Schwabacher Cup, crew's version of the Axe. The Cup has not made its way to Stanford since the Big Row of 1990.
Washington Dual Recap: In the highly anticipated race between the two powerhouses, Washington got the best of Cal, winning two out of three races last weekend at Redwood Shores. The Bears' varsity eight and second varsity eight both finished second to the Huskies, while the freshman eight were able to avoid the sweep by beating Washington by six seconds.
'We simply need to be more aggressive,' said men's head coach Steve Gladstone. 'The guys rowed a good strong piece, but not with the same passion and abandon as earlier races this season. We will re-group on Monday, and come back after it.'

Next Up For The Bears: After the Big Row, the Bears will head back to practice to prepare for the Pac-10 championships held in Rancho Cordova on May 16th. Last year the Bears' varsity eight was not able to win its sixth straight Pac-10 title, finishing second behind Washington. However, the second varsity eight and freshman eight were both crowned Pac-10 champions. The win was the sixth in a row for the second varsity eight.
