SERIES HISTORY: Oregon State and Washington have faced one another a total of 384 times over the years. OSU leads the all-time series, 211-172-1, a total that includes three Beavers wins this year. Last season, the Huskies beat OSU twice in non-conference games in Corvallis and then took two of three in a Pac-10 series in Seattle. This year, the Huskies and Beavers have already played three times, once at a tournament in Riverside (Feb. 29) and twice in non-conference play at Husky Ballpark (April 12-13). OSU won the game in Riverside, 13-8, as Chris Campos and Aaron Mathews each notched four hits. In the first of the two at Husky Ballpark, Mathews and Campos each homered in a 7-4 OSU win. The following day, the Beavs edged the UW, 6-4, in 12 innings. Aaron Hathaway drove in runs in the eighth (to draw within one run), ninth (to tie it at 3-3) and the 11th (to tie it at 4-4), but OSU scored two in the 12th to win. Washington head coach Ken Knutson is 38-31 all-time vs. Oregon State head man Pat Casey is 27-30 against the UW.

COACH 'K': Now in his 12th season in charge of the Washington baseball team, Ken Knutson has compiled an impressive list of accomplishments. Knutson has led the Dawgs to two Pac-10 championships, four Pac-10 Northern Division titles, two other second-place finishes and five NCAA Regional berths. His career overall record now stands at 413-266-2 (.608). With 413 wins, he is the second-winningest coach in UW history, trailing only Bob MacDonald (422). Before becoming the Husky head man in 1993, Knutson served as the Husky pitching coach for eight seasons. In 1985, his UW pitching staff led the nation with a 2.80 ERA. Knutson holds a 201-87-2 (.697) record in home games. He is 175-119 (.595) in Pac-10 games. Knutson has coached 40 first-team All-Pac-10 selections in 11 seasons, and has been named league coach of the year three times. A 1981 All-Pac-10 left-handed pitcher at the UW, he is joined by assistants Joe Ross, Travis Jewett, and Gregg Swenson and undergrad assistant Scott Robertson.

LAST WEEK: Washington swept a three-game series from Arizona last weekend at Husky Ballpark, winning two of the three games in its last at bat. Friday's game was a relative breeze as the Huskies scored six in the first inning and coasted to a 6-1 win. Matt Lane's three-run double was the big blow in the first and Kyle Parker allowed only one hit and one run over five innings for the win. Saturday, the Huskies entered the ninth up 6-5 before allowing a run. However, Aaron Hathaway beat out a would-be, inning-ending double-play to send home in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. Hathaway went 4-for-5 with two RBI and Brent Lillibridge hit two home runs. Sunday, After Arizona posted eight runs in the top of the sixth to take an 11-8 lead, Washington rallied with two in the sixth, two in the eighth and four in the ninth before Greg Isaacson won it with a two-out solo homer in the 10th. Kyle Larsen became the third Husky on record to hit three home runs in a game, belting three solo homers to lead off innings. The UW hit six homers in the game.

NORTHWEST FLAVOR: As is usually the case, the Husky baseball roster is made up primarily of players from the state of Washington. In fact, 32 of the 36 players on the preseason roster are from the state of Washington, and another, Trent Baysinger, grew up in the city of Moscow, Idaho, just a mile or so from the Washington border. Aside from Washington and Idaho, only two other states are represented on the Husky roster as two players come from the state of Colorado -- RS-freshman Matt Tucker and sophomore Devin Warner -- and other from Oregon, freshman James Allan.

PRESEASON ACCOLADES: Perhaps more than in any other season since the 1999 merger of the Pac-10's two divisions, the preseason publications have a lot of good things to say about the 2004 Husky baseball team. The Huskies were ranked no lower than 35th in the various preseason polls: No. 23 in Collegiate Baseball, No. 27 in the ESPN/Sports Weekly coaches' poll, No. 35 in Baseball America and No. 18 in the NCBWA (baseball writers) poll. Baseball America, in its extensive preview edition, tabbed the UW for a sixth-place finish, but included the Dawgs in its postseason projections. The Huskies were represented by Will Fenton on the preseason All-Pac-10 team while Fenton was also named the No. 9 Pac-10 prospect for the 2004 draft. Junior 1B Kyle Larsen was No. 10 on that list while freshman RHP Tim Lincecum was named the No. 5 newcomer in the league. Additionally, Fenton was tabbed for the best fastball and the best breaking ball in the league while junior C Aaron Hathaway earned best defensive catcher and best arm for a catcher. Sophomore SS Brent Lillibridge was named best infield arm in the league and Larsen was named best defensive 1B.
