Bruins Fall to USC, 6-4

UCLA (23-19, 6-7) scored four runs in the fifth inning to even the score, but USC (21-22, 7-6) scored two in the eighth to claim a 6-4 victory at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Friday night.
USC built an early 4-0 lead as the Trojans hit the home runs over the first four frames. Jeff Clement hit a two-run homer in the first, while solo shots from Baron Frost and Jon Brewster came in the third and fourth.
The Bruins rallied with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the score. A lead-off double from Jarrad Page started the frame, while back-to-back singles from Mike Svetlic and Preston Griffin drove in the first run. After an out, Ryan McCarthy brought two more runs home with a double to shallow right field. A walk would then be issued to Wes Whisler before Matt Thayer brought in the fourth Bruin run with a single to right field. At the end of five, the score was tied at 4-4.
USC broke the tie with two runs in the eighth to take a 6-4 lead. UCLA was unable to score in the final two frames as the Trojans took home the Friday night win.
Casey Janssen dropped to 7-3 on the season after striking out seven batters in 7.1 innings of work.
Griffin led UCLA with three hits, including a double. McCarthy had a team-high two RBI.
The teams will face-off tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Right-hander Bryan Beck (2-3) will take the mound for UCLA.
