Cougars Fall To No. 2 Stanford 8-3
April 30, 2004
STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomore Zach McAngus drove home all of Washington State's runs with a single and a two-run home run that came in the eighth in WSU's 8-3 loss to No. 2 Stanford, Friday at Sunken Diamond in a Pacific-10 Conference baseball game.
'I really respect this team (the Cougars)and the way they keep playing every inning,' WSU Head Coach Tim Mooney said. 'I have yet to see us not play hard every inning. We just couldn't quite get the big hit. Against a team like Stanford you have to capitalize when you have runners in scoring position and we just didn't do that.'
Aaron MacKenzie (5-5) recorded the loss for the Cougars (23-17, 5-8 Pac-10) by allowing 10 hits and eight runs, all earned, in the first five innings of the game. Relief pitcher Dane Renkert finished the game for WSU, striking out two and allowing only four Stanford batters to reach base with two hits and two walks.
'MacKenzie battled with the heart of a lion,' Mooney added. 'He just wasn't sharp for us today. But, credit to Renkert for throwing so well in relief. He improved each inning and allowed us to save the bullpen for the rest of the series.'
Starting pitcher Mark Romanczuk (9-1) pitched seven innings for the Cardinal (33-6, 8-2 Pac-10), allowing three runs, all earned, and seven hits, while striking out three Cougars.
Stanford took the 2-0 lead in the second inning with a two-run home run by Brian Hall, driving home Danny Putnam, who walked to lead off the inning.
With two outs, the Cardinal scored four runs in the third with three hits, including a two-run long ball by Donny Lucy to score Putnam and end the third inning scoring rally. Putnam reached base on a two-run double that scored Sam Fuld and Jed Lowrie
Stanford extended its lead to 8-0, scoring two runs with four consecutive singles in the fifth inning. Lucy singled to the left side to drive home Lowrie and Hall then singled to the right side to score Putnam for the final Cardinal run of the game.
McAngus drove home his first run in the sixth inning when he singled up the middle to score Jason Freeman, who had reached base with a single and advanced to second on a one-base hit by Grant Richardson.
Washington State will play the second game of the three-game conference series against Stanford Saturday at 1 p.m., at Sunken Diamond.
