Godwin Added to Cal's 2004-05 Roster

April 30, 2004

BERKELEY, Calif. - Meredith Godwin, the top female golfer in the state of Delaware, has signed a letter of intent to compete for the California women's golf team beginning with the 2004-05 season, head coach Nancy McDaniel announced today.

'We're excited that Meredith we'll be joining the Cal family,' said McDaniel. 'We've never had a player from the Northeast, so it further shows how our recruiting efforts are branching out. Meredith is a well-rounded individual with strong academics. We expect her to be prepared to tee it up in the fall.'

A product of Swarthmore, Pa., Godwin attends school about 15 minutes from her home at Archmere Academy in Claymont, Del., where she is a four-year starter on the school's boys' golf team. Some of her best tournament finishes include: 2002 Pennsylvania Women's Amateur Championship Flight and match play with Carol Semple Thomson, 2002 and 2003 Harry Hammond Cup champion and second place at the 2003 AJGA Greater Hartford Open Junior Classic.

Godwin's best tournament round was a two-under-par 70 in a PGA Junior Series event at the Penn State University Blue Course. Last May at the Women's U.S. Open Qualifier, she was in a five-way playoff for two spots to advance to Sectional Qualifying and birdied the second playoff hole to secure a position.

Godwin's academic resume is equally as impressive. She is a member of the National Honor Society and French National Honor Society and recently received the Scholar Athlete Award from U.S. Congressman Curt Welden. She also has been active in the community, volunteering at golf clinics and tutoring students at an elementary school in Wilmington, Del.
