No. 7 Stanford Defeats Arizona State 7-6

Tempe, Ariz. - Catalina Morris went 2-for-4 with a homerun as the No. 7 Stanford softball team defeated Arizona State, 7-6 this evening in Tempe, Ariz. The Cardinal improve to 39-12, 9-4 in the Pac-10 while the Sun Devils fall to 31-25, 1-11 in conference play.

The Sun Devils got on the board in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Phelan Wright.

The Cardinal responded in the top of the second, scoring all four runs with two outs. Lauren Lappin opened the inning with a single but was retired on a fielder's choice by Jessica Allister. Leah Nelson singled through the left side putting runners on first and second. Jacki Hansen entered the game as a pinch runner. Both runners moved up on a passed ball. Meghan Sickler reached base on an error by the shortstop, scoring Hansen. Katherine Hoffman hit an infield single to load the bases. With two outs, Jackie Rinehart singled to centerfield, scoring Nelson and Sickler. Heather Shook hit an infield single to score Hoffman.

Arizona State got one run back in the bottom of the third when Kristin Farber scored on an error by the Cardinal second baseman.

With two outs in the top of the fourth, Heather Shook doubled down the leftfield line. Catalina Morris then hit a homerun to center to put Stanford up 6-2.

Allister opened the fifth inning a double to left centerfield. Nelson walked and Shoney Hixson entered the game as the pinch runner. With one out, Sickler reached base on an error by the first baseman as Allister scored.

ASU's Valerie Sevilla hit a a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to close the gap to 7-4. Two batters later, Heidi Knabe smacked a two-run homerun to make it a one run game.

Dana Sorensen (24-7) picked up the win for Stanford pitching 5.0 innings with six runs on eight hits with six strikeouts. Laura Severson notched her second save of the season, pitching two shutout innings.

Heather Shook had a 2-for-4 day at the plate with a run scored and an RBI. Leah Nelson went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Jackie Rinehart added two RBI on the night.

The Cardinal are back in action tomorrow night against No. 1 Arizona at 7 p.m. in Tucson, Arizona.
