May 1, 2004
Seattle, Wash. - The UCLA women's rowing team competed at the 35th Annual Opening Day Regatta, today, finishing third in the Women's Windermere Cup race behind Washington and the Italian National Team. The Bruins also finished fourth in both the Women's Erickson Cascade Cup race and the Women's Novice Eight event.
One of the largest Opening Day crowds in history, estimated at 40,000 spectators, lined the entire 2,000-meter course both from the shore and in boats. Another throng viewed the races from the unique aerial vantage point of the Montlake Bridge that hovers across the Cut, 300 meters from the finish line.
The Bruin varsity eight finished in 6:48.56, 10-seconds behind the second-place Italian National Team. The Huskies reclaimed the women's Windermere Cup, now in its 18th year, after Belarus won last season. UW's varsity eight finished the course in 6:32.70 to capture the women's main event title for the 11th time in the last 13 years.
The UCLA second varsity eight finished fourth in the Women's Erickson Cascade Cup race behind Pac-10 rivals Washington State, Washington, and Oregon State. The Cougars won the event in 6:34.25, followed by Washington (6:38.13), Oregon State (6:48.73), and UCLA (6:52.41).
The only trophy not collected by the Huskies was the women's Cascade Cup. Cross-state rival Washington State defeated UW by one boat length to snap a 13-year winning streak by the Huskies' junior varsity in Cascade Cup competition.
UCLA also finished fourth in the Women's Novice Eight event. Washington 'A' posted a winning time of 6:41.94, 9-seconds over Oregon State in 6:50.44. Washington State finished third in 6:53.05, followed by UCLA (7:00.11) and the Washington 'B' boat (7:11.91).
The Bruins end their regular season schedule and compete next at the Pac-10 Rowing Championships on Sunday, May 16, in Rancho Cordova, Calif.
