May 1, 2004
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. - The Golden Bears' varsity eight and second varsity eight remained undefeated this season with their wins against cross-town rival Stanford today at Redwood Shores. The Cal women swept all races in the annual Big Row, with all boats crossing the finish line well before Stanford.
The varsity eight got a good start, and after the first 500 meters it held a five-seat lead over the visiting Cardinal. The Bears never slowed, only extending their lead throughout the entire race. The Bears finished seven seconds ahead of Stanford.
Cal's second varsity eight took a commanding lead in the first 1000 meters, and ended up finishing over 20 seconds ahead of the Cardinal to remain undefeated on the year.
Both varsity four boats crossed the finish line before Stanford, with Cal A beating Cal B by less than two seconds. The novice four also won its race, finishing over 20 seconds ahead of Stanford.
The novice eight won its race against Stanford's varsity lightweight eight by a total of 11 seconds.
'This was an important race for us,' said Cal coach Dave O'Neill. 'We have a lot of respect for Stanford's program, and the best way to show that respect is to bring a full effort, and I'm confident we did that. Now we are looking forward to the Pac-10's in two weeks.'
The Bears will head back to practice this week in preparation for the upcoming Pac-10 Championships held on May 16 in Rancho Cordova.
