May 3, 2004

Bob Cantu, who served as the basketball administrative assistant for the USC men's basketball team for the past three years and coached collegiately the previous five years, has been promoted to assistant coach, Trojan head coach Henry Bibby announced today (May 3).

'Bob has been a valuable asset to our program for the past three years,' Bibby said. 'I have a lot of confidence in Bob and he is well deserving of this promotion.'

His new responsibilities will include serving as recruiting coordinator and assisting in the team defense. Cantu will continue to handle the team's scheduling and coordinate its Nike Apparel.

As basketball administrative assistant, he was the director of the Henry Bibby Basketball Camps and Clinics as well as the USC Team Camp. Cantu also handled public speaking and promotion of the program to local schools, youth groups, and non-profit organizations. He also addressed USC's Out-of-Bounders Club before every home game, fielding questions from Trojan alumni and supporters.

Cantu, 30, came to USC after a year-and-a-half serving as an assistant coach at Sacramento State (2000-01). While with the Hornets, his responsibilities included recruiting (he signed one of the top classes in school history), fund-raising (including securing John Wooden for a tip-off banquet), coordinating the team defense, organizing individual workouts, controlled the operation budget and monitored academics.

Prior to that Cantu spent three seasons (1997-1999) as assistant coach at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, Calif. While at Cuesta, Cantu served as the recruitment and placement coordinator and assisted in daily coaching duties. In his three years with the Cougars, the team averaged 23 wins a season and claimed a pair of Western State Conference titles. He also placed 10 players with Division I scholarships.

Prior to his tenure at Cuesta, Cantu served (1996-1997) as a basketball administrative assistant at Cal Poly. His responsibilities with the Mustangs included film exchange, film breakdown, scouting, assisting in recruiting, and directing the summer basketball camps. Cantu served as director of the camps from its inception and helped raise participation to over 600 in two years.

Before coaching in college, Cantu spent three seasons (1993-96) as the head JV coach and varsity assistant coach at Mission Prep High in San Luis Obispo, Calif. He guided the Royals to three league championships.

Outside the coaching ranks, Cantu is the founder and director of the Bob Cantu Basketball Camps. These camps are open to boys and girls ages 6-17.

He received his bachelor's degree in sociology from Chapman University in 1997. Cantu is married to the former Barbara Schulz. They reside in Placentia.
