Hyatts Home Run Lifts Washington Softball To Victory Over Oregon

May 2, 2004

EUGENE, Ore.- An eighth leadoff home run by sophomore Sarah Hyatt lifted the seventh-ranked Washington softball team (34-12) to the 1-0 victory over No. 11 Oregon (35-14) this afternoon at Howe Field. Washington improves to 8-5 in the Pac-10, while Oregon dips to 9-6.

Neither team could get a runner past second base through six innings.

Washington threatened in the top of the seventh inning, loading the bases with one out on an error, a walk and a hit by pitch. Oregon ace Ani Nyhus worked her way out of the jam with a fielder's choice to the plate and a fly ball to centerfield to end the inning.

Beth Boscovivh led off the bottom of the seventh with a single into left field. The Ducks attempted to sacrifice her to second base but Dani Baird popped up the bunt for the first out of the inning. Boek then struck out Kayleen Hudson and UW catcher Kristen Rivera threw out Boscovich stealing on the play to push the game into extra-innings.

Hyatt led off the eight with a towering home run over the centerfield fence on a 1-2 pitch to end the game. It marked Hyatt's 11th home run of the season.

Boek (23-7) picked up the win for the Huskies as she scattered three hits, walked none and struck out 11. Nyhus (20-10) took the loss as she allowed five hits and one run over 7.2 innings with four walks and six strikeouts.

Washington returns to action next week with four road games. The week kicks off at UCLA on Wednesday, May 5 at 2 p.m.
