Tennis Teams Earn High Seeds For NCAA Tournament

LOS ANGELES -- The USC men's and women's tennis teams were each selected to compete in the 2004 NCAA Division I Tennis Championships, the NCAA announced today. Both teams will host first and second-round matches next week at Marks Tennis Stadium.

Selected as the No. 2 seed overall, the men will face Montana State (17-5) in the first round on Saturday, May 15, at noon, immediately following a first round match-up between San Diego (13-7) and No. 32 California (7-16) at 9 a.m. The second round match between the winners will be played on Sunday, May 16, at noon, with that winner moving to the NCAA Round of 16 in Tulsa, Okla. USC, ranked No. 3 in the most recent ITA poll, completed the regular season with a 19-3 overall record and 6-1 mark in the Pac-10 for a share of the conference title.

In an announcement released today, head coach Peter Smith was named the 2004 Pac-10 Coach of the Year, while senior Adriano Biasella was selected to the All-Pac-10 first team. Johan Berg and Jamil Al-Agba earned All-Pac-10 honorable mention honors.

The sixth-ranked Women of Troy, selected as the No. 8 seed in the tournament field, host American (16-8) in the first round on Friday, May 14, at 1 p.m., following a first-round match-up between 21st-ranked Indiana (17-7) and No. 41 Arizona (6-12) at 9 a.m. The women's second round will be played on Saturday, May 15, at 3 p.m., with the winner advancing to the NCAA Round of 16 to be held in Athens, Ga. The Women of Troy finished the regular season with a 16-6 overall record and a 7-1 mark in the Pac-10 for second place.

The team is led by All-Pac-10 second team selections Luana Magnani and Anca Anastasiu, and All-Pac-10 honorable mention pick Carine Vermeulen.

Between the two programs, USC owns 23 national team titles and 39 singles and doubles individual championships. This marks the 28th consecutive year the Trojan men have received an NCAA postseason bid and the 13th-straight for the women.

Individual singles and doubles tournament selections will be announced on Thursday, May 6.
