May 5, 2004

BERKELEY - Cal senior Balazs Veress and junior Patrick Briaud have been voted the 2004 Pac-10 Co-Doubles Team of the Year, the league office announced Wednesday.

Veress and Briaud are the first Bear duo to win the award, which was first given in 2000.

Veress, the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year in 2001, and Briaud are currently ranked sixth in the country after compiling a 20-11 record. They advanced to the semifinals of the Pac-10 Tournament last month before losing.

In addition, Veress was selected second team All-Pac-10 along with teammate Wayne Wong.

The Bears (7-16) return to action Saturday, May 15 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament when they face San Diego at 9 a.m. on the USC campus in Los Angeles. The winner of that match will play the winner of USC-Montana State in the second round on Sunday, May 16 at 12 noon.
