Bears Claim No. 1 Spot in Final Regular-Season Poll

May 6, 2004

INDIANAPOLIS - In the final poll of the regular season, the undefeated Golden Bears claimed the No. 1 spot for the first time all season. Cal received 14 of the 20 first-place votes to knock Ohio State out of the top spot.

Ohio State had held the No. 1 ranking the entire season, but, after finishing second to Michigan at the Big Ten Championships, moved down to No. 5 in the rankings. Michigan made the biggest jump in the rankings, moving up seven spots to No. 3 after its win at the Big Ten Championships.

The Bears are gearing up for the Pac-10 Championships, where they hope to win their first title since 1979. The second varsity eight and novice eight will both try to defend their titles from a year ago.
