Cougars Off To Solid Start At NCAA West Regional

STANFORD, Calif. - The first day of the NCAA West Regional is in the books for the Washington State women's golf team and led by the play of Kim Welch and Anastasia Kostina, the Cougars are tied for sixth after 18 holes of action at the par 72, 6,159 yard Stanford Golf Course, Thursday.

Aiming to earn a second consecutive berth to the national championships, which will take place at Grand National Lake Course in Opelika, Alabama, May 18-21, the Cougars find themselves among the prized top eight positions at the end of the first day's play. The top eight teams and two individuals from the 54-hole regional will advance to the national championships, which is hosted by Auburn University.

Welch, the junior All-American from Sacramento, Calif., carded four birdies, including three in a row during her 1-under round of 71. Welch heads into Friday's second round tied for fourth, four shots back of leader Hannah Jun of UCLA, who torched the Stanford course with a 5-under 67.

Sophomore Anastasia Kostina of Nakhabino, Russia, carded five birdies in her even-par round of 72 and is tied for seventh. Like her teammate Welch, Kostina put together three consecutive birdies in her round.

Jay-Lee Longbottom shot a 7-over 79 and is tied for 64th while Maria Kostina and Stephanie Parsley both carded 80s and are tied for 75th place.
