No. 3 Cal Second After Opening Round of NCAA West Regional
May 6, 2004
STANFORD, Calif. - No. 3-ranked California is in second place after the first round of the NCAA West Regional Thursday at Stanford Golf Course. The Golden Bears, who are also the third seed, fired a two-over-par 290 and are eight shots behind top seed UCLA (282).
Rounding out the top five were host Stanford 293, Washington 298 and Pepperdine 300.
The Bruins' Hannah Jun leads the individual race at minus-four 68, while her teammate Charlotte Mayorkas and San Jose State's Ashley Gomes are tied for second at 70.
Cal showed its depth today as senior Anna Temple led the way from the No. 4 spot. Temple tied for fourth with a one-under 71, her best round since she shot a 70 in the first round of the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational exactly seven months ago. The Berkeley product posted two birdies and two bogies on the front nine and was one of three Cal golfers (others were Sophia Sheridan and Sofie Andersson) who had eight pars and a birdie on the back nine.
Andersson continued her strong play from the Pac-10 Championships. The sophomore finished the day in a tie for seventh at even-par 72. Senior Sarah Huarte is tied for 15th with a 73, recording a team-high four birdies in the opening round. Sheridan, the Bears other sophomore, is tied for 21st at 74. Senior Claire Dury had a rough day, shooting an 82, but fortunately only the best four rounds count towards the team score. Dury did gain some confidence with a string of five straight pars on holes 10 through 14.
The Bears, who are making their fifth consecutive postseason appearance, begin the second round Friday at 12:40 p.m. from the 10th tee.
