Golden Bears Represent at Pac-10 Multi-Championships

May 7, 2004

Tucson, Ariz. - Junior Brooke Meredith is in second after day one of the Pac-10 Multi-Championships with 3,250 points, a higher first day total than she had in her qualifying 5,511 point heptathlon earlier this season. The junior trails only Arizona State's Jackie Johnson who finished the first day with 3,421 points.

'It is going to be a real fight between the two of them tomorrow for the Pac-10 championship,' Cal multi-events coach Ed Miller said.

Sophomore Scott Sobieralski is in fifth in the decathlon with 3,555 points. The decathlete, who is in his first year competing for the Golden Bears, set personal records in three events. Sobieralski set PRs in the long jump at 22-3 (6.78m), the shot put at 43-2.25 (13.15m) and the 400 meter at 51.53 seconds.

'Scott's second day is better than his first so we are looking forward to tomorrow,' Miller added.

The event continues tomorrow, probably concluding again around 10 p.m. because of the mid-90s Tucson temperatures.
