Huskies Fall Back, But Remain in Hunt for NCAA Bid

May 7, 2004

Stanford, CA - The final round of play at Saturday's NCAA West Regional women's golf championship should prove to be a nail biter. Only eight teams from the 21-squad field will advance to the NCAA Championships May 18-21 at Auburn. Following Friday's second round of play, just 10 strokes separated the teams in seventh and 14th place on the current leaderboard. Washington, which entered the second round in fourth place, slid back to ninth in the field after shooting 21-over 309.

Husky sophomore Paige Mackenzie posted Washington's best score Friday. She shot 3-over 75 and is tied for 26th with a 36-hole score of 150. Sophomore Sung Ea Lee, who carded a 76 during the second round, dropped back to 20th at 148. Lindsay Morgan posted a 77 to tie teammates Ashley Bickerton and Amber Prange for 68th overall at 157. Prange carded a 81 Friday while Bickerton shot 82 after opening the tournament with a 75.

UCLA managed to keep its early lead, shooting 5-over 293 during the second round for a tournament-best total of 575. California made up some ground on the Pac-10 champions by posting a 289, the day's best score. The Golden Bears trail the Bruins by four strokes heading into the final round. Stanford is third overall at 590 while Denver is fourth at 601.

Texas and Georgia made the biggest moves on the leaderboard Friday. The Longhorns shot 8-over 296 while Georgia managed a 10-over 298 to move into a tie for fifth place at 602. Also standing ahead of the Huskies is Ohio State in seventh at 605 and Washington State in eighth at 606. Oregon trails Washington by one stroke while Arizona State is three shots behind the Huskies.

UCLA's Hannah Jun holds a three stroke lead in medalist play. She shot 1-under 71 Friday for a two-day total of 138. Ohio State's Allison Hanna is second at 141 following by the Bruins' Charlotte Mayorkas at 142.

Washington hopes to qualify for the NCAA for the third time in four years. Last season the Huskies placed 13th at the NCAA regional. Due to injuries, the Huskies only sported a four-player lineup. Mackenzie was not able to participate last year due to a back injury.
