Pac-10 Multi-Events Open Up Championship Season for Arizona Track & Field

TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona's track and field program opened up the postseason at the Pac-10 Combined Events Championships. The Wildcats are hosting this year's conference championships at Roy P. Drachman Stadium, Friday-Saturday, May 7-8. Arizona is represented by two heptathletes this weekend.
Arizona's two female competitors opened up the day on a very high note. Junior Amanda Underwood got the action started for the Wildcats with a big personal best in the 100-meter hurdles. Underwood's time of 14.58 seconds was the fifth-fastest of the day. Junior Jessica Corkill also hit a personal best in the hurdles. She finished eighth in 15.44 seconds.
In the high jump, Underwood went on to hit a seasonal best performance, clearing a height of 5 feet, 2 ï¿½ inches (1.58m). Corkill cleared 4 feet, 9 ï¿½ inches in the high jump.
The third event of the day in the women's heptathlon was the shot put. Corkill was able to get two clean throws off before fouling on her third attempt. She finished with a best throw of 30 feet, 8 ï¿½ inches (9.35m). Underwood hit a snag in her first two attempts, fouling on both tries. On her third try, she was able to hit a clean throw of 30 feet, 1 inch (9.17m).
Underwood and Corkill finished up in the 200 meters. Corkill finished seventh overall with a time of 25.84 seconds, while Underwood was ninth in 26.01 seconds. Both were seasonal bests for the Wildcat women.
In the overall standings after four events, Underwood sits in eighth place with 2,881 points. Corkill is right behind her in ninth with 2,659 points. Arizona State's Jackie Johnson leads the overall competition with 3,421 points.
The multi-event action continues on Saturday afternoon. The men's decathlon will run the 110-meter hurdles at 3 p.m., while the women's heptathlon will start with the long jump at 5 p.m.
