Bruins Drop 20-9 Slugfest to Arizona

Arizona (24-20-1) scored 13 runs in the final four inning to post a 20-9 nonconference win over UCLA (26-22) in front of 538 fans at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
After the Wildcats scored two runs in the first frame, UCLA evened the score in the bottom of the inning on a two-run homer from Wes Whisler. It was the fourth on the season for Whisler as he drove in Preston Griffin, who had singled to leadoff the inning.
The Wildcats would add five more runs in the top of the second inning before the UCLA pitchers held them off the board until the sixth frame.
In the third, UCLA cut the Arizona lead to two runs as the Bruins scored three in the inning. With two outs, Matt Thayer started the Bruin rally with a single up the middle. After a walk to Brandon Averill, Chris Denove would bring Thayer across home plate with a single through the left side. Jarrad Page brought in two more runs with another single up the middle. After three, UCLA trailed 7-5.
The Wildcats would once again stretch their lead as they posted four runs in the sixth. Back-to-back home runs from Jordan Brown and Moises Duran highlighted the frame.
UCLA would score two of its own in the bottom of the sixth as Averill hit a two-run homer. It was his fifth of the season.
Arizona scored four in the seventh and five in the eighth to put the game out of the Bruins' reach.
In the seventh, Griffin added another UCLA run with a solo home run before Will Penniall added the final Bruin run as he hit his first collegiate home run in the bottom of the ninth inning
The Bruins and Wildcats will face-off in the rubber match in a Mother's Day matinee at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m.
