Underwood Finishes Seventh in Heptathlon at Pac-10 Championships

TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona's track and field program hosted the second and final day of the Pac-10 Multi-Events Championships on Saturday, May 8. The women completed the last three events of the heptathlon, while the men finished the last five events of the decathlon. Arizona's Amanda Underwood finished the heptathlon competition in seventh place, moving up one spot from the first day. Her seventh-place finish will contribute two points to the Wildcat women's team scoring at next week's Pac-10 Conference Championships.

The women started out the day with the long jump. Underwood hit her best jump on her third attempt, finishing at 16 feet, 11 � inches (5.16m, w: 3.8), contributing 603 points to her overall score. Arizona's second heptathlete, junior Jessica Corkill, jumped 17 feet, 9 inches (5.41m) on her first attempt. On her second attempt, Corkill fouled and suffered an injury that forced her to withdraw from the rest of the competition.

In the javelin, Underwood finished tied for third with a throw of 119 feet, 6 inches (36.42m). The last event of the day was the 800 meters for the women. Underwood clocked a time of 2:28.82 to finish seventh overall.

The overall standings put Underwood in seventh place with 4,791 points, an improvement of 244 points from her previous best this season.
