WSU Scores Early, Often In 17-3 Win Over Sac State

May 8, 2004

Washington State backed Aaron Trolia's pitching performance with 18 hits, but most of them were not necessary as the Cougar pitcher allowed just two hits in eight innings as WSU captured a 17-3 win over visiting Sacramento State in a non-conference baseball game Saturday night at Bailey-Brayton Field.

The Cougar (24-19) win snapped a four-game losing skid that included three losses to the number one ranked Stanford Cardinal. Trolia (5-4) ended his eight innings with a career high 11 strikeouts while walking four. Senior Brett Beetham threw the final inning for WSU, allowing five hits and three runs.

Sacramento State (25-31) starter Warren Rosebrock (4-9) suffered the loss, working two outs into the fourth inning while allowing WSU's first five runs, four earned. He walked three and did not have a strikeout. Justin Deme replaced Rosebrock and allowed eight runs, while Chris Mols allowed the final four runs.

Trolia was almost perfect through four innings. He notched his seventh strikeout in the third and had a no-hit game going into the fifth inning. The only hits he allowed were in the fifth inning when Kyle Aure hit a bloop single to center and Jack Arroyo, a sharp single to center. The Cougar senior got out of a bases loaded jam in the inning by enticing Craig Johnson into a double play grounder to shortstop.

WSU drew first blood with a single tally in the first inning. After Trolia easily retired the Hornets with two strikeouts and a grounder to second, Zach McAngus singled to center just deep enough to score Jason Freeman from second base.

The Cougars added two more runs in the second with just one hit. Justin Hart came home with WSU's second run when he slid under the catcher's tag after Justin McClure hit a slow grounder to Hornet first baseman Brian Blauser, who chose to try for a play at the plate. Later in the inning Jason Freeman's sacrifice fly to right field scored Brandon Reddinger.

WSU's run parade continued in the fourth after a scoreless third inning. Jason Freeman did the damage with WSU's first extra base hit, a double down the right field line that scored Reddinger from third and Kaeo Rubin from first, giving the Cougars a 5-0 lead.

The Cougars put up two more runs in the fifth when both McAngus and Hart scored after collecting singles. Reddinger's groundout to short allowed McAngus to score and McClure singled to center field to score Hart, but the Cougar shortstop tried to take second base on the play and was thrown out.

In the bottom of the sixth, the first three Cougars reached base when Rubin doubled to short centerfield, Freeman walked and pinch hitter Collin Henderson was hit by a pitch. Richardson then lofted a high sacrifice fly to deep left field that allowed Rubin to trot home for an 8-0 Cougar lead. Deme was then able to get out of the inning without further damage when McAngus and Farrar flew out to center and left, respectively.

The Cougars continued their run production in the seventh with four hits that produced five runs and a 13-0 Cougar lead. Richardson drove home two runs with a double to right center, while Rubin, Jeff Miller and Henderson had back-to-back-to-back run-scoring singles.

WSU's final four runs came in the eighth when Henderson doubled home two runs with the bases loaded and Richardson's single to center scored the final two runs.

The two teams continue their three-game series Sunday with a 2 p.m. contest, following Monday by the 11 a.m. finale.
