Lincecum Fans 13 As UW Beats No. 1 Stanford

SEATTLE - The 16th-ranked Washington baseball team scored in each of the first five inningsand freshman Tim Lincecum struck out 13 over eight innings as the UW cruised to a 9-2 win overNo. 1 Stanford Sunday at Husky Ballpark.

The win gave the Huskies (28-15-1 overall, 12-6 in the Pac-10) a 2-1 series win over the top-ranked Cardinal (37-8, 11-4) and left the UW in second place in the conference, a half-gamebehind Stanford. The UW has six remaining conference games -- three each at USC and home vs.UCLA -- while Stanford has nine more.

Stanford had won 15 straight three-game series . The Cardinal hadn't lost a series since April oflast season, when Arizona took two of three in a series in Palo Alto.

Lincecum (7-1), a righty from Renton's Liberty High, earned his second win of the weekendagainst the Cardinal. After having worked the final two innings of Friday's 3-2, 10-inning win, heposted his longest outing of the year in Sunday's victory. He allowed two runs on seven hits whilewalking four and fanning 13, including six of the last eight batters he faced. With 127 strikeoutson the season, Lincecum is only four short of the UW record of 131, set by Jeff Heaverlo in 1999.

Stanford freshman starter Greg Reynolds (3-1) suffered his first loss, allowing four runs on fourhits over two and one-third innings.

Senior third baseman John Otness led the UW offense, going 3-for-5 with a homer and three runsbatted in. Sophomore center fielder Brent Lillibridge was 1-for-4, but walked twice, homered anddrove in two.

The Huskies used home runs to get out to a lead in the first two innings. Lillibridge belted the firstpitch of the bottom of the first out to left for his ninth home run of the season, marking the sixthtime this year he's led off a game with a homer. The following inning, Aaron Hathaway reachedon a one-out walk and Otness lined his eighth home run of the year down the left-field line to giveWashington a 3-0 edge.

The UW tacked on another in the third when Kyle Larsen scored on a sacrifice fly from Hathaway.

After being held hitless through the first three innings, the Cardinal broke through in the fourth asChris Minaker and Jed Lowrie singled to begin the inning. Danny Putnam followed with a singlethrough the right side, but Husky right fielder Taylor Johnson threw Minaker out at the plate topreserve the 4-0 lead. A strikeout and a flyout got the Huskies out of the inning unscathed.

Washington made it 5-0 in the fourth on Larsen's sacrifice fly that scored Lillibridge before theCardinal scored their first run in the fifth when DH Chris Carter led off with a solo homer, hissixth of the season. Stanford went on to put runners at first and third with one out, but Lincecumstruck out Minaker and Lowrie to end the threat.

Washington continued its scoring in the bottom of the fifth, helped along by a Stanford error.Matt Lane singled to lead off and Hathaway's ground ball to third was mis-handled by thirdbaseman Chris Lewis, putting runners at second and third. Otness singled to drive in Lane and,with reliever Blake Holler on, Taylor Johnson and Lillibridge walked to force in a run.

Greg Isaacson followed with a long drive to right that was caught up against the wall, a few feetshort of a grand slam, but Otness nonetheless came home from third on the UW's third sacrificefly. Washington posted a fourth run to take a 9-1 lead on an RBI groundout from Zach Clem.

Cardinal left fielder Danny Putnam hit a one-out solo homer in the eighth, his 13th of the season,to make it 9-2.

Washington takes on Portland Tuesday and Wednesday nights in a pair of non-conference gamesbefore travelling to USC for a three-game, Pac-10 series next weekend. Both games vs. the Pilotsand all three vs. the Trojans will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
